What Interior Designers Do

Interior Designers

Interior Designers play a vital role in creating functional spaces and possess a deep understanding of materiality,  architectural elements and aesthetics, which they use to create harmonious and inviting spaces.

The role of an interior designer goes far beyond simply picking colours; it’s an art form in itself that demands a critical mind, a creative flow, and a problem-solving attitude.

At STUDIO GAXA, our Interior Design team  use their skills and expertise to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and tailored to the needs of our clients.

Many people mistake the role of an Interior Designer for an Interior Stylist

An Interior Stylist will look at soft finishes such as decor, drapery, artwork, rugs,, furniture and upholstery.

They may create a new colour palette for a space, add texture to a room and look at adding/replacing furniture to optimise the space and layout of a room.

The attention to detail in styling can be what gives a room new life.

Here are a few things you may not know about the role of an Interior Designer and what they do.

  • Interior Designers focus on hard finishes, glass, cabinetry, and stone, which are fixed features that cannot be physically moved. They use these materials to create a cohesive and visually stunning space.

  • Collaborating with an Architect is an essential part of an Interior Designer’s role. They work together to ensure that the building’s form and fit-out complement each other and comply with regulations.

  • The interior design process requires extensive documentation to bring a vision to life. This includes floor plans, elevations, and specifications to meet client requirements. Designers typically use software for these drawings and must communicate clearly with builders and contractors to ensure correct execution.

  • Adherence to the Australian Building code a vital part of the documentation process and providing client guidance when works do not fall under the Exempt Development Code or if a proposed configuration requires planning approval.
