Studio Gaxa successfully navigated the Development Approval process for notable first-storey alterations and additions, including a meticulously designed studio top garage with lane access that both pays homage to the building’s existing heritage roots and embraces a minimalist, sleek design aesthetic. This project, located in the vibrant inner city of Sydney, benefits from a pared-back palette that highlights the careful attention to detail, creating layers of interest throughout the home and perfectly complementing its crisp and cool aesthetic, setting the ideal tone for this urban dwelling.

The Development Approval (DA) process marked a pivotal phase in the project’s timeline, facilitating the transition from planning to execution of the major alterations and additions that would redefine the home’s building design and functionality.

This new structure was tailored comply with City of Sydney Councils firm compliance on heritage design, integrating these with a minimalist and sleek approach. Inside, the home is designed to create a clear distinction between the old and new. Visitors journey from the original ornate high-ceiling cottage into the extended living and dining space, where the first level addition features a light-filled staircase and an external building form wrapped in architectural nail strip cladding.

Achieving this vision involved a strategic Development Approval process, careful selection of materials, and a design philosophy that prioritised clarity and simplicity. The minimalist approach allowed the home’s detailed craftsmanship to shine, with every element—from the exterior cladding to the internal finishes—carefully chosen to contribute to the overall aesthetic. The intention was to not only preserve the essence of the home’s heritage but also to introduce a modern design language that reflects the contemporary urban context of Sydney.

Through Studio Gaxa’s expertise in navigating the regulatory and planning landscape, the project successfully bridges the gap between the home’s historical significance and its future as a modern, functional, and visually stunning space.
